Sacred Monumental Area

Mount San Michele is one of the most important and well-known sites of the Great War on the Isonzo Front. Despite its rather modest height (275 m), it was crucial to the Austro-Hungarian defense system on the Karst Plateau.

For over a year, Austro-Hungarians and Italians fought fierce battles that claimed thousands of lives. Today, Mount San Michele stands as a symbol and a pivotal site for the historical and collective memory of many European peoples. Numerous traces of the conflict remain on the hill celebrated in the poetry of Giuseppe Ungaretti, alongside commemorative monuments in the Monumental Area, established here in 1922.

Visitors to the site can see monuments and memorial stones dedicated to the troops who fought here, along with walkways, trenches, and the Cima 3 Cannon Gallery, which is open during the official hours of the Multimedia Museum.

At five locations along the outdoor museum route, visitors can access additional augmented reality content via a mobile app.
